I believe this problem extends outside of our industry and is a problem in our culture and it has to do with how British culture views engineers. Engineers in the UK are viewed with some disdain and looked down on as people with dirty hands who I can't do without but don't really want to know and certainly don't respect. Where as in Germany engineers are held in the same high regard as other professions like doctors, teachers, lawyers etc.. We will always be on an uphill struggle until we can came how engineers are viewed and respected.
